Back in the old days, you wouldn’t usually see an average child playing Pokemon Go, checking Instagram with their friends, or running rampant in the streets with a carton of Cup O’ Noodles in their hand. They would be sitting quietly knitting or even reading a book. Basically, what a child considered fun or entertaining and something they’d do in their free time about fifty years ago, would be very different from the preferences of an average child today. One big reason for this is modern technology. Long ago, families made their own clothes out of fabrics that they bought themselves, so children were taught how to knit so that they could support their own families in the future. Since they had no phones or tablets, children ended up using knitting/crocheting as a way to complete a chore, to have fun and pass time. If modern technology such as sewing machines had been existent, children would not do that. This is why arts that work with cloth and yarn such as sewing, knitting, and crocheting are dying out among children. In addition, students also find it hard to concentrate on other older pastimes such as reading or freestyle writing due to the fact that they are always on their smartphones or any other tech device. According to one recent survey, one participant stated, “I believe that the arts [painting, pottery] are beginning to fade away.” Overall, the results show reading as the most popular answer to what hobby is fading. Most children, now having electronics would rather pick up their phone because they are more entertained by their phone then by a book.
